What Is Industrial Engineering?

Industrial engineering is a branch of engineering dealing with the optimization of complex processes or systems. It is concerned with the development, improvement, implementation and evaluation of integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information, equipment, energy, materials, analysis and synthesis, as well as the mathematical, physical and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering design to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems or processes. Its underlying concepts overlap considerably with certain business-oriented disciplines such as Operations Management, but the engineering side tends to emphasize extensive mathematicalproficiency and usage of quantitative methods.

Depending on the sub-speciality(ies) involved, industrial engineering may also be known as operations managementmanagement scienceoperations researchsystems engineering, ormanufacturing engineering, usually depending on the viewpoint or motives of the user. Recruiters or educational establishments use the names to differentiate themselves from others. In health care, industrial engineers are more commonly known as health management engineers or health systems engineers.

While the term originally applied to manufacturing, the use of "industrial" in "industrial engineering" can be somewhat misleading, since it has grown to encompass any methodical or quantitative approach to optimizing how a process, system, or organization operates. Some engineering universities and educational agencies around the world have changed the term “industrial” to the broader term “production”, leading to the typical extensions noted above. In fact, the primary U.S. professional organization for Industrial Engineers, the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) has been considering changing its name to something broader (such as the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers), although the latest vote among membership deemed this unnecessary for the time being.

The various topics of concern to industrial engineers include management sciencefinancial engineeringengineering managementsupply chain managementprocess engineering, operations researchsystems engineeringergonomics, cost and value engineeringquality engineering, facilities planning, and the engineering design process. Traditionally, a major aspect of industrial engineering was planning the layouts of factories and designing assembly lines and other manufacturing paradigms. And now, in so-called lean manufacturingsystems, industrial engineers work to eliminate wastes of time, money, materials, energy, and other resources.

Examples of where industrial engineering might be used include designing an assembly workstation, strategizing for various operational logistics, consulting as an efficiency expert, developing a new financial algorithm or loan system for a bank, streamlining operation and emergency room location or usage in a hospital, planning complex distribution schemes for materials or products (referred to as Supply Chain Management), and shortening lines (or queues) at a bank, hospital, or a theme park.

Industrial engineers typically use computer simulation (especially discrete event simulation), along with extensive mathematical tools and modeling and computational methods for system analysis, evaluation, and optimization.

Learning English

English = International Language

Everybody knows that English is an international language. As an Indonesian, my English is not good enough. But, I will always learn and have practice. I hope, through this post, I can share my knowledge about English and get some corrections if there are some mistakes here.

I have learned English since I was elementary school, junior and senior high school. I has been 12 years learning English. And since I studied at university, I just started my English course in my third year study.

I wanna share about my first lesson, a simple English that I learned in the first class of my English course. It is about imperative. Imperative is a direct order, command, a warning or just instruction to others. For an easy example is 'open the door'. Usually it consists only two or three words.

There are two kinds of imperative. Positive and negative imperative. 'Be carefull' is an example of positive imperative and 'Don't go' is an example of negative imperative. 'Watch out', 'Don't leave me', 'Save me', 'take the glass' are also examples of imperative. So, we can conclude here that English is not difficult, we can use only imperative verb to communicate in English.

That's all for now, I hope it is useful for all of us.

> Batam Is My Hometown

I was born in 1990 at Batam Island. Now, I have been back to Batam for 15 days. I have not came back for almost a year. The only reason I came back is to do a practical work as a student from a university. It makes me the happiness of being at home.

I will try to enjoy this. It will takes two months. :)

Practical Work at EFK (Elnusa Fabrikasi Konstruksi)

I have been starting my practical work at EFK since 1st July 2011. It has been for 1 week and I am starting my second week now.

It is confused for the first day. I started to meet the HRD manager, Mr. Ulul Azmi, for completing the requirements before starting the practical work such as permission letter from my parents and the copy of the assurance. And the he explained the rules and told me to behave as a good student. And then he told me to have induction first, it is explanation of safety at the field.

After that, I met the production manager, Mr. Wawan. He told me to behave well at the field because people there have been worked for years so they know the filed very well. He said I should manage my time myself for the practical work. But then, I got a permission to go home because I could not go to the field without a safety shoes and start my real practical work on monday, 4th july.

On monday, I came with safety shoes, a helmet, and my university form (almamater). I came to Mr. Wawan's office and waited him to do his work before we go to the field. At 8.30, we went to the field. I met Mr kardi, Mr wahyu, Mr Suparno, Mr Uchok, Mr Komas, Mr Emon. Mr Wahyu and Mr Komas is the production officer and the rest of them is the supervisor. And then, Mr Kardi took me a tour to the field, met the operator from the start of the process to the end. After that, we got back to the office.

From the first day until now, I have no idea to do.

Activities For Today

> Today is Sunday. The sun is very bright.
It is a free day and I started it with washing my underwear this morning.

After this, I am going to go to a trvel agent. I am going to look for a flight.  You are right. I am going to have a trip. But, It is not a fun trip at all. I have to go Batam because I have to do Practical Work (In Indonesian, it is called 'Kerja Praktek') at PT ELNUSA. This is about my study, we have to do it to accomplish our study as industrial engineering.

The Letter from Elnusa, an oil & gas services company

By that letter, means that the practical work starts on 1st July and ends on 31st August. It will be 2 months. It doesn't matter for me. Actually, My family lives at Batam. So, this practical work will be okay. There is no need to be confused by searching a bording house, a place to eat, etc. So, I am going to look for a flight on 30th June.

My Saturday Night

This evening is a saturday night. Saturday night means dating time. But, it is not for me. Yeah, I just finished one of my assignment about Hegiene and Safety Environtment. Actually, it was a reading task, but I have resumed the book which must be read precaution in order to whenever the lecturer is asking about it, i will show my resume of the book.

I am going to outpouring the heart, or in Indonesian it is said 'curhat', This smester, third year of my study, is really hard. I hope this will be a good lesson to me to face the world after graduating. Cheer Up...

Last thursday, we, I and another students at the same department, played a new game. I think, it was an innovation game or it just a game from some stress students. But, it was really fun. Actually, we were going to play 'futsal' and we were just 7. It can't  be played by 7 persons. So, we thought a new game to be played in the 'futsal' field while waiting our friends to come. We played 3 on 3. A team won if they scored more than the other team. The score was whe the ball hit the bar of the goal and there was no goal keeper. If you hit the side bar you got 1 point, but if you hit the vertical bar you got 3 points. The stupidness happened when we missed to hit the bar, even the side bar, whereas you was near the bar. It was hurt when your opposite got 3 points by hitting the vertical bar.

Remembering that time still makes me laugh. Just like this evening, when I am alone in my room. But, I am not crazy. I am just smiling to this night.

My Level 2 Score in ELTI

Last tuesday, I had a test in ELTI and it was the test to jump to the next level. It was writting and listening test at 6.30 pm. It was about the grammar, made a story of my childhood, and completed the dialog. I felt that I will pass the test. And then, on last friday I got the verbal test. We had to face the teacher with our partner and then we asked each other with a list question which is given. I think, I did my best there. At the end of the test, we were showed the result for our test.

I gor A- for the writing test, B- for my verbal test, and A- for listening test. Do you think I am good enough in English?

I don't think so. I feel what have I gotten during the course is not enough. I need more practice in English so I can speak well and effective. At the class, sometimes we still used bahasa and the converesation was too simple. I hope I could got more.

What should I do now?
I can't continue the next level on 28 this month because I am going to take a practice in my study (KP = Kerja Praktek). So I said to the front office of ELTI to have a break. They said that I have 8 months for the break. Actually, I am still waiting the confirmation from the company which will be my practice place.

Any suggestion?

Nearest Plans on June, July, and August

First, on June, there are a few plans in my life. I try to concentrate to the UAS of my study this semester. To support the exams, I will make a review for every subjects in this semester. There are also some final tasks for this semester which must be finished this month before the exams start. For this week, Permod task is the priority for student of Industrial Engineering UNS.

On 9 June, students class A of Industrial Engineering are going to be commission of an entrepreneur seminar. Actually, It was a task from the lecturer of entrepreneur to the students of sixth semester. But, that is a fun task, I think.

The national seminar has theme about showing the beginners to start their own business with banking strategy. We have Mandiri Bank as our speaker to tell the way to start business with banking strategy in that seminar. The reason we choose Mandiri is because of the easier bureaucracy. There are also some speakers, they are the practitioners who use banking strategy and they have started with Mandiri. They are the owner of Klewer.com and 'Kedai Langit Jogja'.

For July and August, I am going to do KP (Kerja Praktek) in Batam. It might be, I hope. Amiin..

Softskill : Effective Communication Skill

Effective Communication Skill is one of soft skills that are needed to work at Halliburton. I think, they  use English to communicate in the company because English is an international language and Halliburton is a worldwide company with 60,000 employees and over 80 countries. So, I have to have a skill to communicate effectively and it is in English. Therefore, I take an English course in ELTI Surakarta to increase, to be able, to be confident, and to gain the skill to communicate effectively in English.

In Solo or Surakarta, there are many good English courses such as ELTI, LIA, ILP, etc. I choose ELTI because of the fee, it is cheaper than others. I have to speak in English as often as possible, so I do not prior the quality of the teacher and choose the cheaper one. ELTI stands for English Language Training International that is centered in Jakarta and managed by KOMPAS GRAMEDIA.

Actually, I have starting the course since March. It has been almost three months. I started the course from level 2 for Active Communication. It was twice a week, on tuesday and friday. We had different teacher on that twice meeting in a week. On tuesday, we were taught by Mr. Rusdiayanto and Miss Mei taught on friday. Here is the payment of my course in ELTI.

On 29 March, the first class, was an introducing class. I hated that class because they talked about where they came from. Actually, I am not shy about my home town, Batam is a great town. My childhood was there. But, people from other islands only know about the bad things of Batam. Not mentioned here because you know what. After i told them where I came from, they said "hmm..Black Market". Huft.

For the first lesson in that class was about imperative. Mr. Rusdi showed us a picture of a firefighter saves a girl and asked us what the girl says to the man, only two words. Some student said thank you, but it was not what he meant. Save me. It was what he meant. He wanted to show us that English is simple. We can used only two words to make people understand what we mean. And it's called imperative. It was the first lesson there. The vocabulary that I write down on my note was crescent, in Bahasa means sabit.

First lesson with Miss Mei on friday, the same week, was about noun. There are two kinds of noun, uncountable noun and countable noun. Uncountable noun  means nouns that can be counted by measurement like liter, for example our body needs 8 liters of water everyday. Countable noun means nouns that can be counted one by one, for example I have two hands. As active communication class, we did a lot of conversations on game in the class. With Miss Mei, we played a game like who the best buyer and the best seller. The seller sold fruits and the buyer only had five thousands rupiah to buy fruits as many as they can. The best seller was the seller who gained the most on profit. I was a buyer, I got 25 fruits and still had four thousands on my hand, but they said it was not logic. I think it was great and the seller was the worst.

Day after day, I got boring in the class. The game was boring and the conversation was on the book. But, I still hope that someday it will be useful for my communication skill especially in English. It has been being 10 weeks now. I am going to have a test for this level. It will be held on 7 June for writing test and 10 June for verbal test. Wish me luck.

I forgot something, I was absent the class for three times because of emergency situation, such as rain, headache, and an unknown reason. Hehe.

I don't know what to say about them.

This morning, I red Kompas.com, it was about our government (DPR) and their "pelesiran". I don't know what to say and how to respect them which should be respected. You can read it yourself here.

"Pelesiaran" to other country is one of our honorable member of DPR agenda. The story there was about their "pelesiran" to Australia and met the student from Indonesia whom studied in Australia. I don't know, my be it can be said that coming late is our culture and of course they are too. But, from KJRI (Konsulat Jendral RI) staffs start the opening with having dinner together. After having dinner, they had a dialog with member of PPIA (Perhimpunjan Pelajar Indonesia australia). As an Indonesian, I think you can imagine what happened there and I don't wanna talk about it here.

All I want to say here is thanks to PPIA. You embarrassed them well. Hehe.

Remapping: Plan After Graduating

This is a short story behind the remapping my life target.
Once upon a time, there were 4 boys came from Sebelas Maret University, they were a little frustrated because of their study, who went to "Kota Pelajar" Jogjakarta to follow a training about PPIC (Production Planning and Inventory Control. The theme wasSupply Chain Management in Oil and Gas Company. The trainer came from British Petroleum (BP) Indonesia, his name is Hernawa, ST. This story will be shared completely in the next post. I promise.
Back to the topic, I am so interested of working at oil and gas company. I am not a liar, it is because of its salary. Minimum salary as a fresh graduate is up to $1000. And then I have decided to work at oil and gas services company and chosen Halliburton as my first career after graduating in 2012.  Amiin.
Here are some information that I have browsed.

Company Profile of Halliburton

Founded in 1919, Halliburton is one of the world’s largest providers of products and services to the energy industry. With nearly 60,000 employees in approximately 80 countries, the company serves the upstream oil and gas industry throughout the lifecycle of the reservoir – from locating hydrocarbons and managing geological data, to drilling and formation evaluation, well construction and completion, and optimizing production through the life of the field.

And here is a short about the position that I want.

Supply Chain Professional

From the smallest mechanical parts to 5-ton trucks, Halliburton's Supply Chain organization is responsible for all movement and storage of raw materials and finished goods and services from initial sourcing all the way through delivery to the end user. Key activities within this end-to-end process include purchasing, production planning, order processing and fulfillment, inventory management, manufacturing, transportation, distribution and customer service.
What you'll do
As a member of Halliburton's Supply Chain organization, you'll work with one of two groups: Manufacturing or Procurement, Materials and Logistics (PM&L). In either of these groups, you'll play a big part in managing Halliburton's worldwide inventory, and the work you perform will make a real difference to the Company's bottom line.
You'll develop and implement strategies to ensure that the materials we need around the world arrive at the right locations, at the right time, in the proper quantity and at an acceptable cost. Collectively, these tasks can have a significant impact on the Company's profitability. Some of your responsibilities might include:
  • Managing supplier relationships
  • Sourcing goods and services globally
  • Effectively planning for production and demand
  • Managing inventory
  • Managing product movements
  • Ensuring material quality.
Who we want
We're looking for critical thinkers with a strategic mindset, effective communication skills and a strong commitment to providing outstanding service. You should hold a bachelor- or master-level degree in supply chain, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial management or business.
The red words mean the hard skill that is needed.

    EDC : English Day Contract

It is not English Debate Competition, but it is English Day Contract. English day means we speak in English all day. We, the members of Habibie's boarding house (someday, I will post about our boarding house and the members of it-may be not), make a contract about English day. Here is the story.

Actually, I have forgot the story behind the contract. Haha..
That night, last sunday, we had eaten at Obonk. As you know, boys talked about women first and it was censored here. It is not because of  its content but there are some names that can not be mentioned here. And the second topic is about football, it was the Barclays Premier League. It was Liverpool vs Sunderland. And the order come.

The contract was be made after we ate. We made a contract to speak English every monday and thursday. For the looser, who speaks Indonesian language, will get a punishment. It is clean the bathroom and the closet. The last monday, the looser was Danu. Congrats to Danu. prok..prok..prok..

We hope, EDC will increase our conversation skill. Amiin.

    Why Blog ?

Blog is a blend of the term web blog that is a type of website or a part of a website. The owner of a blog is called as blogger. About its history, you can search at wikipedia or google. Usually, a blog belongs to one person or one organization with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, and other material such as graphics or video. A blog can be the blogger's online diary too. Most blogs are interactive, allowing visitors to leave comments and even message each other via widgets on the blogs and it is this interactivity that distinguishes them from other static websites.

To be a blogger you have not to be a website master. Because there are so many blogging provider to make a blog for free such as blogger.com, wordpress.com, or the others. So, you have not to master html language or PHP to make a blog.

Why do I choose to do blogging ?
It is because I prefer to do something positive in my live than waste my whole time and do nothing. By this blog, no drugs, no free sex, no corruption, collusion, and nepotism. It does not mean that I have addiction on them (just a clarification). But, doing something positive is a good way to live, isn't it ?

A blog is a personal website. By blogging, I can express everything I feel, make a comment about  the govern or event, I can write as much as I can and share a lot of things to people. Through my blog, I hope we can exchange ideas about everything. And of course, all things that shared here are a positive and useful for us, both readers and the blogger.

As we know, English is international language. So, this blog is a media to practice my English too. Especially about the grammar because I am an Indonesian, we have not spoken English since we born. Someday, I will take a course of conversation to improve my speaking skill in English.

I have read some articles about earning money from blogging and maybe I will try  some tricks for my blog. Or maybe someday, I can be famous like Raditya Dika (I am sorry if I have written a wrong spell, but the one who I mean is the owner of radityadika.com). He is one of the famous blogger in Indonesia, my country.

I hope I can learn more things here.
